One word. That's all you get. Give your team a single clue and hope they're on your wavelength, while the other team races to crack the same word first. Then switch to the second mode and things get sneakier: a blindfolded guesser, a table full of clues, and a rival team secretly writing the same words to cancel yours out. Easy words are safe, hard words score big, and every round ends with someone yelling "how did you not get that?!" Two ways to play, up to 12 players, and more mixed signals than a group chat.

What's in the box

  • 100 word cards in three difficulties: Easy, Medium and Hard, five words each
  • 8 dry-erase boards and 8 markers
  • 1 blindfold
  • 1 sand timer

Mode 1: Clue race

4–12 players · about 15 minutes

  1. Split into Team Red and Team Blue, and each team picks a clue-giver.
  2. Team Red's clue-giver gives a one-word clue for the first word on the card. Red has 60 seconds to make one guess.
  3. Wrong? Team Blue's clue-giver gives a clue for the same word. Keep alternating until a team gets it.
  4. The first clue-giver to get their team to 3 words wins the round. First team to 5 rounds wins.

Mode 2: Cancel out

6–8 players · about 30 minutes

  1. Team Red's guesser puts on the blindfold, picks Easy, Medium or Hard, draws a card and calls a number from 1 to 5. That word is the secret word.
  2. Everyone else writes a one-word clue in 60 seconds. Red wants to help; Blue wants to write the same clues so they cancel out.
  3. Matching clues are removed. The guesser sees what's left and has 60 seconds to guess.
  4. Red scores 1, 2 or 3 for Easy, Medium or Hard. Blue scores 2 for each clue it cancels, up to 4 a round. First to 10 points wins.

Clue rules

  • No parts of the word or synonyms. "Ball" is out for "football".
  • No sound-alikes. "Night" is out for "knight".
  • Any language works, but not a direct translation, and translations cancel each other out.

The artist's journey: a Mixed Signals character from pencil sketch to final art

The artist's journey

Every character started as a two-minute sketch.

Each face on the box began as a quick pencil idea, then was structured, refined and finished until it looked like someone mid-game: guessing, confused or thrilled.

Some ideas didn't make the cut. They still shaped where the art ended up.

Meet the team: Claudio, game designer; Sans, illustrator and visual designer

Made by a small team

The people behind Mixed Signals.

Claudio designed the game. Sans illustrated it and shaped how it looks.

A small team that cares about every detail, from the first idea to your table.
